With Memorial Day behind us, summer is (unofficially) here. And that means one thing. It’s time for BBQ season.
As you start planning your first backyard BBQ of the season and crafting your perfect burger-filled menu you want to make sure you’ve stocked up on all the right condiments. New data from Grubhub shows the most popular condiments in the United States might not be what what you would expect.
As MarthaStewart.com reported, Grubhub’s data showed that mayonnaise is the add-on most GrubHub users request alongside their burger orders. It was followed closely by ketchup with traditional yellow mustard coming in third.
For toppings, the food delivery company reported that pickles took home the number one most requested spot, ahead of both tomatoes and lettuce (which came in second and third respectively). Rounding out the top five are onions and bacon.
Though the condiment choices Americans make were a bit surprising, their cheese choice is not. According to the data, the most requested type of cheese on a burger is good old American. Other favorites in America included cheddar, Swiss, provolone, and Pepper Jack.

There was one more surprising stat in the data too. Natalie Gerke, senior communications manager for Grubhub, shared with the website that Americans are starting to really fall in love with veggie burgers too. Even the vegetable burger flavors are starting to become fractured across the nation. She noted that black bean burgers are more popular in the South and Midwest, while the Impossible Burger is more popular in the Northeast and West.
Now that you know what toppings you need it’s time to make one decision: Are you going to buy mayonnaise for your BBQ or make it yourself?
